'Superstore' Actor Jon Miyahara Dies at 83
He was famous for playing the largely silent Cloud 9 employee, Brett.
Superstore actor Jon Miyahara has passed away at 83.
Miyahara’s death was confirmed by fellow Superstore actor Colton Dunn in an Instagram post. Dunn wrote that Miyahara “was a really awesome guy and as a performer could speak volumes with just a look.”
“He was such a memorable part of the Cloud 9 team. It was an honor to know him and to work with him,” continue Dunn. “I was lucky enough to meet some of his family and my thoughts are with them. Rest in Peace John 💙.”
Miyahara, who played Cloud 9 employee Brett Kobashigawa, appeared in 105 of the 118 episode run of the show. His character became a fan favorite because of his lack of dialogue and numerous scenes of deadpan stares that served as the punchline to wild scenes.
In one of his biggest moments that ended up being one of his only scenes with dialogue, Miyahara says “Oh shit” as a tornado comes to ravage the Cloud 9 store in finale to Superstore’s second season.
Born Jonathan Yasushi Miyahara on Aug. 8, 1941 in Los Angeles, the late actor also reprised the role of his Superstore character in the show American Auto by NBC. Aside from that, Miyahara didn’t have any other major acting credits.
After news broke of his death, members of the Superstore cast came to social media to pay their respects in the comment sections of Dunn’s post. Kelly Stables, who played Kelly, wrote, “Oh man! He was always so sweet! Rest in peace.”
Sierra Teller Ornelas, who was a write and producer on the show, added, “Oh no, he was literally the sweetest man. Prayers up to his family and loved ones.”
Cast members Irene White and Michael Bunin, who played Carol and Jeff respectively, also joined in to mourn. “What an incredible man,” wrote White, with Bunin adding, “I’m so sad to hear this news. Many fun days and many fun conversations. Very nice guy.”
