Timothée Chalamet Performs Bob Dylan Songs on 'SNL'
Surprise guest James Blake joined on keyboard.
Timothée Chalamet took over the Saturday Night Live stage to perform a few Bob Dylan songs and showcase the musical prowess that he’s built up over the last five years for the singer's biopic.
Chalamet first performed "Outlaw Blues" with a live band. After kicking the show off as this week’s host, he captivated the audience with his rendition of the 1965 Dylan track. Surprise guest James Blake joined on keyboard as Chalamet performed "Three Angels."
The actor later returned to the stage with Blake to perform “Tomorrow Is a Long Time."
Chalamet didn’t just perform—he really gave his all on stage. The Wonka actor recently revealed that he practiced singing and performing for five years to prepare for his role in the Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown. He performs live throughout the film instead of using prerecorded instruments or vocals.
“I had a lot of time to practice because we were meant to make the film five and a half years ago, then there was COVID and then there was the actors’ strike, so I had years to prepare,” Chalamet said on the The Graham Norton Show. “I was confident about singing and by the time we got to do the film, I wanted to sing and play the songs live.”
Chalamet hosted SNL’s final new episode before the 50th anniversary special in February. Cast member Heidi Gardner previously spoke about how much the SNL cast appreciates having Chalamet around.
“I don’t want to say he’s like our perpetual little brother here at SNL, but he is, he’s like family at this point,” she said. “He’s so much fun and when a host is so much fun, and you can tell they love where they’re at, you’re like, ‘Oh, I just want you to have the best show.’”
Ahead of his hosting duty, Chalamet made a promo for this week’s episode where he dedicated a song that he would be performing to Oscar nominee Sarah Sherman.
"Hey, I'm Timothée Chalamet and I'll be the host and musical guest this week on SNL. And Sarah, I was thinking about dedicating one of my songs to you," said Chalamet.
"Oh my God, really?" Sherman responded. "Which one is it? Probably 'Forever Young.'"
"No, I was thinking 'Knocking on Heaven's Door,'" Chalamet deadpanned.
This is Chalamet’s third time hosting SNL.
