UPDATED 11:36 a.m. ET: Alijah Arenas is now out of the induced coma he was placed into following a serious car accident on Thursday, April 24.

In a statement released by his family, the Arenas family confirmed that he's in recovery at the hospital and has shown "significant signs of progress within the last 24 hours." His family said that when he opened his eyes, he asked if anyone got hurt in the accident. His mother and father have been at his side as he recovers.

"I remember hearing banging on the car window, but I couldn't see anything because the smoke was so thick," said one of the people who helped recover Alijah from the burning vehicle following the crash. "That's when I realized someone was inside. I tried to break the window, but it wouldn't give. Then I saw one of the windows was cracked just enough and we used everything we had to bend it and pull him out. The car was on fire. We just knew we had to get him out."

The family asked for privacy as their son continues to receive treatment in the hospital. "Further updates will be shared as Alijah continues to heal," they shared.

Alijah Arenas, the son of retired NBA star Gilbert Arenas, has been placed into an induced coma following a serious car accident, Shams Charania reports.

The 18-year-old five-star prospect and USC commit was involved in a car crash in the early hours of Thursday, April 24. Details of the accident have not been publicly released. Earlier this year, Arenas was selected to play in the McDonald's All-American Game.

The news comes after the high school basketball player announced his intentions to follow in his father's footsteps and sign a deal with Adidas. He's the No. 10 overall player and No. 1 shooting guard in the 2025 recruiting class. Alijah was originally scheduled to graduate to college basketball in 2026 before he reclassified.

He committed to the USC Trojans men's basketball team in January after turning down offers from multiple schools, including Arizona and Louisville. Arenas is currently part of the roster at Chatsworth High School in Southern California.
