NBA Star Ja Morant Wins Six-Figure Settlement in Lawsuit Against Former Sponsor
The Wing Guru was found liable for breaching its contract with the Memphis Grizzlies point guard.
Ja Morant has secured a mid-six-figure award in his contract dispute with Memphis restaurant The Wing Guru.
As first reported by FOX13 Memphis, “A Shelby County Chancery Court has ordered Memphis restaurant The Wing Guru to pay the Grizzlies’ Ja Morant over $300,000 in damages and interest after the All-Star point guard sued them for breach of contract.”
The ruling enforces an earlier arbitration decision.
According to the outlet, Morant originally signed a deal to promote the business “some years ago,” then alleged the company stopped paying while continuing to use his name, image, and likeness (NIL) in marketing.
Morant’s attorney stated that the restaurant publicly promised on Instagram to send $75,000, which it acknowledged was owed, but Morant maintained that he never received the money.
The dispute was sent to arbitration, where the arbitrator sided with Morant, directing The Wing Guru to cease using his likeness and to pay $300,000 in compensation and damages plus interest.
The arbitrator also awarded about $65,000 in interest and legal costs. According to FOX13’s report, the business had until late November 2024 to either challenge the award or pay; Morant’s legal team stated that neither occurred, and the Chancery Court has now entered an order enforcing payment.
The combined sums place the resolution firmly in the six-figure range, with the core $300,000 award plus additional interest and fees reflecting the arbitrator’s findings and the court’s enforcement. It is unclear how the restaurant intends to rectify this judgment, and a representative for the restaurant was unavailable for comment to the outlet.
This civil case is separate from an earlier lawsuit that drew national attention in 2022, when a 17-year-old accused Morant of punching him during a pickup game in Memphis and displaying a gun. In April, a judge dismissed the case, ruling that Morant had acted in self-defense.
