16-Year-Old High School Baseball Player Dies After Truck Crashes into Tree

A 16-year-old high school player has tragically lost his life after his truck reportedly overturned and crashed into a tree.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 5 p.m. on July 29 and was a single-vehicle accident. Authorities say Caiden Miles McGuff—a baseball player for Camden High School—had a female passenger in a 2004 Ford pickup truck when the crash occurred.

At some point, authorities say, the truck went off the left side of the road near the intersection of Ridgeway Road and Richardson Boulevard in Kershaw County. The truck then reportedly struck a phone box before overturning and striking a tree.

McGuff and his female passenger were rushed to a local hospital where he died, the extent of the injuries suffered by his passenger are unknown.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Camden High School Principal Rose Montgomery said, "Caiden was an outstanding student and remarkable athlete who gave his all on the field, and a wonderful friend to so many in our Bulldog family. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Caiden’s family and friends during this tough time"

She continued, "At Camden High, we are truly a family, and we care deeply about all of our students and staff. When a tragic loss like this occurs, it's very emotional for all of us. We understand this news is difficult to process, so we plan to have counselors and social workers available to support our students and staff as long as our community needs them.”

Montgomery finished by saying, “I know you will join me in keeping Caiden's family, friends, and teammates in your thoughts and prayers during the difficult days ahead."

McGuff's obituary says he's survived by his parents, one sister and three brothers. A celebration of life is planned for the teen on Sunday, August 3 at Malvern Hill Baptist Church.
