Jalen Brunson is the toast of New York after taking a major pay cut in his new contract extension.

On Friday, the New York Knicks point guard signed a four-year, $156.5 million extension, which is $113 million less guaranteed than he is eligible to sign for a year from now. Had Brunson waited until next summer, he could have signed a five-year extension for $269 million.

This news arrives as Brunson is fresh off a dominant run in the playoffs, where he averaged 32.4 points, 7.5 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game. Despite Jalen's heroics, the Knicks season came to an end in the second round, where the Indiana Pacers won in a grueling seven-game series.

In light of Brunson's pay cut, basketball fans praised the All-NBA point guard for solidifying his unselfish reputation.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams hopped on Twitter Friday to applaud Brunson for his decision.

"Tonight, by all accounts, @JalenBrunson1 not only solidified his legacy with the @nyknicks but in New York City as a whole," Adams wrote. "But all the legends of the past know legacies aren’t built in contracts and payouts — they’re built with blood, sweat, and your brothers on the court. Now let’s get that title!"
