Former En Vogue Member Dawn Robinson Reveals She Has Been Living in Her Car for 'Almost Three Years'
The R&B singer says she was previously "trapped" in a living arrangement.
Former En Vogue member Dawn Robinson revealed she has been living in her car for the last three years.
The 58-year-old, who was also a member of neo-soul trio Lucy Pearl, posted a YouTube vlog titled "Your New Life Is In the Scary 🫣" on Tuesday (March 11), explaining why she no longer lives in a home.
"You guys, for the past three—almost three years—I have been living in my car," Robinson began around the 2:30-minute mark of the video below.
She went on to explain that she'd previously been living with her parents in Las Vegas beginning in 2020, before her mom became "very angry." "A lot of her anger, she was taking out on me and I was her target all the time," Robinson recalled. "And I was like, I can't deal with this."
The vocalist said she lived in her car for a month before being encouraged to return to Los Angeles by a male co-manager, who invited her to live with him before Robinson discovered that he didn't have room.
"So it turned into 'Okay, well, I'm going to put you in a hotel for the night and that one night turned into eight months,'" she continued.
When looking for an apartment, which the man offered to pay for, Robinson recounted that he declined them all, particularly disliking the neighborhoods. It was then that Robinson told her assistant that she'd developed an interest in living in her vehicle. The singer also accused her former co-manager of "playing games" and trying to "trap" her and keep her "in a vulnerable situation."
Robinson began with driving her car to Malibu and said that she "felt a sense of freedom" in her decision. "I was so free I felt like, Wow, this is so different. I felt like I was on a camping trip. I just felt like it was the right thing to do–I didn't regret it," she affirmed.
Robinson also claimed that other celebrities have lived in their cars before, even temporarily, like the late Marvin Gaye. "This is not like, 'Oh my God, poor Dawn, she's living in her car and it's terrible," she said. "I'm learning about who I am. I'm learning myself as a person as a woman. ... If you would have said to me while I was in En Vogue, 'You're going to be living in your car one day,' I would be like, 'Huh? No I'm always going to have an apartment; I can't live in my car."
Robinson explained that her "older" car had a temporary leak and her dog of 16 years, Max, had died while she lived in her car. She also denied that living in her car is for publicity. Towards the end of the video, Robinson expressed that she one day hopes to make a documentary about living off-grid, shouting out Netflix as a potential buyer. To maintain her hygiene, Robinson has a gym membership, where she showers daily.
"I challenge you to do the things that are are scary. Do things that you don't think that you're capable of but you want to do," she signed off. "Be spontaneous."
Robinson was a member of En Vogue since the group's formation in 1989 until 1997, last reuniting with them for a 2019 performance.
