Iman Shumpert Says He and Teyana Taylor Had 'Great Years' During Their Marriage
The NBA player and Taylor, who share two daughters, divorced last year.
Iman Shumpert isn't invested in what social media has to say about his divorce from Teyana Taylor.
The NBA player and entrepreneur was a guest on podcast Tap In With TT, hosted by TT Torrez, and among other topics, addressed his and Taylor's 2024 divorce. The ex-spouses, who married in 2016, share two daughters, Iman "Junie," nine, and Rue Rose, four.
Shumpert and Taylor's divorce also made headlines over claims of infidelity and child neglect, with the former Brooklyn Nets player also seeking to have his child support adjusted. More recently, Taylor accused her ex-husband of leaking sealed documents and purportedly making her face online scrutiny for outrageous settlement claims.
But around the 38-minute mark of the interview below, Shumpert dismissed the online gossip as "barbershop conversation." "We've been divorced a year now," he said. "We've got joint custody of the kids, so I got to see the kids when I got to see the kids. She's got to see the kids when she's got to see the kids. Which, it's cool. There's nothing wrong with that."
Shumpert also expressed that he's "really good at not caring" about what's said about his divorce on social media, calling it his "superpower."
"When I do something for the day, I'm doing that and I can't control what I can't control," he continued. "I can't do nothing but you know see my babies and do my job–everything else just falls into place."
The athlete added that he and Taylor shared "great years together." "So it's like I can't let this now cause it to be like now, cause it to be like I'm throwing just negative stuff in my mind. It's like, No, something happened they discussing it, but that happened a year ago," he said.
After being asked if speculation about the divorce can "trigger him," Shumpert denied it. "Not really. I mean, some of the filings after, it's hurtful to see. But other than that, people was discussing the good stuff all the time but that's kind of what–we put it out there. So it's like, they got to discuss the good stuff so I can't really tell them, 'Don't discuss the bad!' I've got to let it go."
Shumpert said that he was only offended when the divorce was being addressed in his hometown of Chicago. "I think that's where I'm biased, like, Chicago ain't allowed to do that. Y'all just be cool, like, shut y'all ass up," he said.
Elsewhere in the interview, Shumpert expressed that he was iffy about getting married or being in a relationship again. "I didn't realize how young I fell in love and now I need to chill with me for a little bit. I need to get me right," he said, adding, "A part of me wanted to be my dad."
