Two-Time Olympic Champion Carlos Yulo Scores Condo, Colonoscopies and Lifetime Ramen
The Filipino gymnast scored some unconventional prizes after earning two gold medals at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo proudly represented his country during the Olympic Games Paris 2024 and won some interesting prizes along with his coveted gold medal.
Last Saturday (August 3), the 24-year-old participated in a floor vault performance, winning the gold medal, marking the first time a male athlete from the Philippines took home the top achievement. The historic win was followed by another during the final vault the following day, to which Yulo took home more than an award. He was literally given a home, among other unique prizes.
In a statement from Megaworld president Lourdes Gutierrez-Alfonso, Yulo was gifted a three-bedroom condominium valued at P32 million (USD equivalent $555,014.40).
"Since this is a very significant milestone in the history of Philippine sports to have two gold Olympic medals during our 100th year participation as a country in the Olympics, which also coincides with our company’s 35th anniversary this year, we are boosting our reward for Carlos Yulo now totaling to P35-million," stated Gutierrez-Alfonso.
He continued, "He truly deserves this and we will always be proud of him for taking Filipino excellence to the next level."
According to NBC Olympics, Yulo will additionally get two cash prizes totaling P13-million ($225,000 USD) from the Philippine Sports Commission and the country's House of Representatives, respectively. Also thrown in are free colonoscopies and gastroenterology consultations–albeit needing to fulfill the consultations by 45–P100-thousand ($1,730 USD) worth of free furniture; a lifetime worth of free ramen, free buffets and free meals, a lifetime supply of cookies from Cookies By The Bucket; a free iPhone 16 and a lifetime of free engineering design by Nexa Engineering.
Yulo's major wins are impressive, but money has reportedly been a factor in the athlete's estrangement from his mother, Angelica Yulo. In a recent TikTok, Yulo alleged that his mother, who had previously managed his bank accounts, had been "hiding and handling" his gymnast competition earnings without his consent.
In an interview with Bombo Radyo (per Inquirer.net) Yulo denied her son's accusations, claiming that she feared that her son "might run out of money in the future."
“So, what I did was deposit it under my name at BPI here in Vito Cruz. Then, I held on to it and turned it into a bond for a credit card," she told the outlet.
