Katt Williams Stands by Hilarious Claim He Taught Steph Curry to Shoot From Deep
The comedian previously claimed he enlightened arguably the greatest shooter ever on the benefits of taking a three-pointer from further downtown.
Katt Williams is not backing down on his claim that he was the inspiration behind Stephen Curry shooting from waaaaay downtown.
During his interview on the latest episode of 7PM in Brooklyn, Katt was asked about his 2024 appearance on Good One: A Podcast where he explained how he factored into Curry becoming the shooter he is today.
The comedian started off by joking that he also taught 7-footer JaVale McGee how to play basketball when the former NBA player was 12 years old and they were around the same height. "That’s why he can’t play good above the rim because I couldn’t show him nothing," he said.
Katt made it clear that Steph already knew how to play the game of basketball, but the 53-year-old comedian’s long distance approach is what he took away from him.
“I was explaining to him that the way that I play basketball is there’s no such thing as I’m not open, I’m always open. I’m going to all five spots every time," Williams said. "If you notice, that’s how Steph play because if you play like that, you are always open. So if I’m always open, I can always get my shot off."
"So I'm saying he was literally already the greatest," he continued. "Like, this dude, literally understand now, we count him, but I'm saying this dude is doing, he's doing everything 29 feet and out and I'm watching it with my eyes."
Katt said he's simply taking credit for telling Curry "a truth at a pivotal part in his life."
As Williams tells it on Good One: A Podcast, that pivotal part of Steph's life occurred during an annual celebrity basketball game benefitting the Los Angeles Children and Families Services, prior to him playing in the NBA.
"Anybody that know me knows that I don't claim shit that I do," he said of inspiring Steph at the time. "That's not part of doing it. It's doing what it is, and letting that be it. But I am responsible for the greatest shooter in the NBA, without question."
"But this dude comes and he passes that half line, and as soon as he passes the half line, he can shoot from anywhere from there, to the three-point line," Williams said. "So now, the first game, this guy scores, like, 40 points, and he don't break a sweat 'cause he's not running."
"Like, all the other basketball players are running down the court, he's not," he continued. "He's just staying right there. Ain't nobody guard you right there, and that's where he's shooting from."
Katt claimed he explained to Curry that players are taught to run back on defense, starting at the three-point line. "They don't have a defense for the area that you can shoot," he said.
