Brazilian authorities launched an investigation into the police-involved shooting of a soccer player.

According to ESPN, the incident occurred Wednesday night at Anápolis’ Jonas Duarte Stadium, following Gremio Anapolis’ 2-1 loss to Centro Oeste. A now-viral video showed members from each soccer club engaged in a post-match, on-field altercation before a military police officer intentionally fired a rubber bullet at Gremio Anapolis goalkeeper Ramon Souza.

As shown in the footage, Souza was struck in the left leg and immediately began limping away. Gremio Anapolis confirmed the player received on-field treatment from Dr. Diego Bento, “who performed first aid in” a medically equipped vehicle. Souza was subsequently transported to the hospital for further care.

The club condemned the shooting in a statement released on social media, saying it was taking steps to ensure the involved officer was held accountable.

“The Annapolis Guild comes to the public to repudiate the unfortunate, ridiculous and revolting event, at the Jonas Duarte Stadium, this Wednesday night (July 10),” the statement read. “After the end of the match against the Central West team, our goalkeeper Ramón Souza was cowardly hit by a rubber bullet, carried out by an unprepared policeman from the Specialized Policing Company (CPE).”

“A horrible, unbelievable and criminal act by someone who should value the safety and integrity of the people, who were there at the Jonas Duarte Stadium. July 10 is marked by a violent, dirty and horrible act against one of our players, which will never be forgotten. The GEA informs that it will take competent measures, so that the responsible person is punished and that justice is done, so that this CRIMINAL act does not go unpunished.”
