Drake Trashes DeMar DeRozan Jersey Onstage
It seems like they're still on bad terms.
Drake tossed DeMar DeRozan’s jersey on the ground at a recent show.
In newly released footage from his first Sydney show of his Anita Max Wynn tour, Drake was tossed a DeRozan jersey by someone in the audience as he performed "Rich Flex."
After Drake realized it was DeRozan's, he slammed the NBA vet’s jersey on the ground. If the audience didn’t know that the two still weren’t on good terms, it quickly became clear.
Drake and DeRozan’s relationship stretches back over 16 years ago when DeRozan was drafted to the Toronto Raptors, and Drake was on the come-up with the release of his project, So Far Gone.
The two would end up on the cover of SLAM magazine in 2016 (along with former Toronto Raptor Kyle Lowry) titled “6 GODS.” In an article inside of the magazine, DeRozan and Lowry claimed that Drake was “our man” and that he was “really supportive” of the Raptors.
DeRozan also revealed in the article that he lived close to Drake in Los Angeles and that they hung out nearly every summer.
Drake thanked DeRozan for his role on the Raptors after the latter was traded. He also expressed his support for DeRozan while he was on the San Antonio Spurs.
"No matter what, when it comes to him, he'll forever have a friend in me and loyalty out of me because he cared,” DeRozan said on an episode of Club Shay Shay in 2021. "He was there for me when everything was kind of going crazy."
Drake and DeRozan’s relationship soured after the latter appeared on stage at Kendrick Lamar’s “The Pop Out” concert and danced to the scathing Drake diss, “Not Like Us.” DeRozan also appeared in the official video for the song that came out the next month.
Speaking about the cameo in the video, DeRozan expressed that he is still a huge Drake fan like others.
"We love Drake, we always can play him," DeRozan said. "Kendrick been a friend of mine, family. Damn near family, for a long time, for a while. We're from the same city, we grew up damn near in the same neighborhood... It's always been there. It hasn't always been publicized, but, you know, that's basically family."
In the months following, Drake began hinting at people switching up on him, culminating in him grilling DeRozan during a game in Toronto. Drake called him a “goof” and “pussy” under his breath.
In an open diss to DeRozan mid-game, Drake spoke to a Raptors commentator, saying, “If you ever put up a DeRozan banner, I’ll go up there and pull it down myself.”
DeRozan, not taking Drake’s jab seriously, responded in a post-match interview, saying, “He’s going to have a long way to climb to take it down... Tell him good luck.”
