Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy has been arrested in Williamson County, TX, for alleged domestic violence.
TMZ reports that he was arrested last night (Mar. 7) on suspicion of domestic violence for allegedly choking someone. The charge that he’s facing (“ASSAULT FAM/HOUSE MEM IMPEDE BREATH/CIRCULAT” according to online records) is a third-degree felony.
He’s still in custody without bail as he waits to see a judge today, March 8.
Worthy's attorneys, Chip Lewis and Sam Bassett, released a statement with their explanation for what happened. "The complainant was asked multiple times over the last two weeks to vacate Mr. Worthy's residence upon discovery of her infidelity, which a private investigator has video evidence of," the statement reads.
"She has refused to vacate the residence and made a number of extortive efforts prior to resorting to this baseless allegation against Mr. Worthy," it continues. "The complainant further destroyed a room in the residence, scratched Mr. Worthy's face and ripped out parts of his hair, which there is photographic evidence of."
The Chiefs have released a statement about Worthy’s arrest, writing, “We are aware and gathering information.”
Worthy just came off a productive first season for the Chiefs. The receiver finished sixth mong NFL rookies in receptions with 59, seventh in yards with 538, and second in touchdowns from scrimmage with nine.
Worthy’s arrest comes a little under a year after fellow Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was issued an arrest warrant for his involvement in a six-car crash in Dallas.
Rice was wanted on one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury, and six counts of collision involving injury.
Rice turned himself in a few weeks later. He shared a statement on social media claiming “full responsibility” for the pile-up. “Today I met with Dallas PD investigators regarding Saturday’s accident,” he wrote.
“I take full responsibility for my part in this matter and will continue to cooperate with the necessary authorities,” he added. “I sincerely apologize to everyone impacted in Saturday’s accident.”
