Over the past 50 years, Vansons have become known as some of the best leather jackets on the market. From its beginning in the motorcycle world to its evolution into the fashion space through collabs with the likes of Supreme and ALD, the brand continues to level up.

Founded in 1974 in Boston by Mike van der Sleesen and Jamie Goodson, Vanson Leathers began as an all-American made motorcycle gear brand. Over five decades, it has become a symbol of rebellion and craftsmanship embraced by subcultures like streetwear and celebrities.

One of the brand's most iconic motifs are its skeleton jackets. The design was originally worn in 1975 by motorcycle racer David Aldana. The striking black-and-white suit made by Vanson shocked racing officials and captivated fans.

By the late '70s and '80s, punk icons like Joey Ramone and rock stars like Axl Rose had adopted Vanson jackets as pieces of their rebellious uniforms. Even Steve McQueen was spotted in Vanson gear, fusing biker toughness with timeless American cool.

By the ‘90s and 2000s, Vanson was being adopted by hip-hop culture. The premium outerwear became a status symbol in New York City. Artists like LL Cool J and Mase rocked Vanson pieces for red carpets, music videos, and performances.

Over the years, Vanson has continued to be embraced by hip-hop and pop culture. We’ve seen everyone from LeBron James to Cardi B wear one. Vanson was even worn by Mustard when he hit the stage in a custom piece for Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show at Super Bowl LIX.

Vanson has also become a key collaborator for streetwear brands aiming to make a timeless leather jacket. Supreme is a repeat collaborator. In 2017, the brand even reinterpreted Vanson’s iconic skeleton motif. Other big collabs have been released with Aimé Leon Dore and Awake NY. These drops have introduced the brand to a whole new generation.

One of Vanson’s latest lifestyle collaborations is with Fly Geenius. The vibrant City Series collection features leather bomber jackets and shorts that rep New York City boroughs like Harlem and Queens, as well as major global cities like Tokyo. You may have seen ASAP Rocky in a special lime green and purple variation back in 2024. The City Series is available now on Complex Shop.

Every Vanson jacket is still handmade in Fall River, MA. In 2024, Vanson celebrated its 50th anniversary. The brand is a testament to craft and American style, in a fashion world increasingly focused on speed and mass production.
