Dwayne Johnson Rocks $215K Jacob & Co. Watch Honoring Samoan Heritage
According to stylist Ilaria Urbinati, the timepiece “pays homage” to Johnson’s Maui character in 'Moana 2.'
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson enlisted Jacob & Co. for a truly rare, deeply personal timepiece to mark the worldwide premiere of Disney’s Moana sequel in Kapolei, Hawaii.
“We wanted to pay homage to the beloved character of Maui that Dwayne helped make so iconic, and merge that design with Dwayne’s personal tattoo to make it very personal to him,” Ilaria Urbinati, Johnson’s stylist, said of the one-of-a-kind timepiece valued at $215,000.
“We chose black and gold so that even though it’s inspired by an animated character, it still felt timeless and luxurious and something that could be worn with any look," Urbinati added.
The watch, formally known as the Matai Tourbillon, does indeed complement the recent 360 guest's tribal-inspired and Samoan culture-celebrating ink. The word matai means "chief" or "leader" in Samoan.
The watch is 45mm in diameter and boasts 18K rose gold, a sapphire glass and tinted mineral glass case back, water resistance, and a Samoan dial design. The piece is one-of-a-kind, meaning Johnson stands alone when it comes to having the chance to rock it. Per Jacob & Co. chief financial officer Benjamin Arabov, bringing this vision to life marked “an incredible honor” for the team.
Johnson recently shared moments self-reflection in his 360 conversation with Speedy Morman. Naturally, the topic of Rock’s present-day net worth was broached, spurring a life-altering memory from the star of the upcoming Benny Safdie-directed film The Smashing Machine.
“That kind of stuff will define you, man,” he said, looking back on a moment that later inspired the name of his and Dany Garcia’s company, Seven Bucks Productions. “And that stuff, for me, it’s probably why I need a therapist. That’s the kind of shit that stays here in the forefront of my mind.”
Moana 2 hits theaters on Nov. 27.
