Los Angeles Mother Confronts Gov. Gavin Newsom Over LA Fire Response
A mother in Los Angeles had some words for California Governor Gavin Newsom during a visit to the Palisades following the wildfires that ravaged the area.
Sky News caught the interaction where Rachel Darvish, a Palisades resident, spoke to the outlet's Martha Kelner and saw Newsom getting into his vehicle. The woman wasted no time asking Newsom how he was going to respond to the wildfires destroying the area.
"Governor, you got a second?" she told Newsom. "Governor! Governor! I live here, governor. That was my daughter's school, governor. Please tell me what you're going to do."
In response, Newsom told the woman that he was on the phone with President Joe Biden to assess the situation, saying, "I'm literally talking to the president right now to specifically answer the question of what we can do for you and your daughter."
The woman then asked Newsom to prove that he was talking to President Biden, as she didn't believe him. Newsom showed his phone to the mother and claimed he tried calling President Biden multiple times but received no response.
"Why is the President not taking your call?" Darvish asked Newsom. Newsom responded, "Because it's not going through."
Darvish continued to try to hear Newsom and Biden converse, but to no avail. Newsom did tell her that he was doing everything he could to get the President to offer immediate assistance to the dire situation in the Palisades.
"Everyone went to school there – they lost their homes. They lost two homes because they were living in one home and building another," Darvish told Newsom at one point. "Governor, please tell me what you're going to do with the president right now."
In response, Newsom said he was getting resources to help rebuild the area, but that didn't stop Darvish from asking even more questions, such as about the water supply.
"Why was there no water in the hydrants? Is it going to be different next time," she asked. Newsom said, "It has to be, of course...I would do whatever I can."
The Palisades fire has been the most destructive as it has scorched 20,000 acres since Friday morning, and only 8 percent of it has been contained. So far, 10 people have died as a result of the wildfires.
