A brief investigation was spurred by the incident in Pennsylvania.

The reign of would-be terror brought on by the self-described “Box Demon” in Pennsylvania has seemingly come to an end.

The story, which revolves around an unknown individual donning a handmade mask made from a paper plate, has made headlines in recent days, both in the York area and at the national level. In an initial press release, the Northern York County Regional Police Department said officers had “investigated a suspicious person” on Tuesday after a doorbell camera captured them dropping off an empty box at a residence.

“I am the Box Demon,” the individual, wearing a colorful handmade mask, says in the footage shared by police. “I leave this gift, this box, as a gift for you.”

At the time, police said the owner of the home where this “Box Demon” paid a visit had no knowledge of who might be behind the creepy, or at least creepy-adjacent, paper plate mask. The department had also asked for help from the general public in cracking the case. By Wednesday, however, police had shared an update confirming there was no need to be alarmed by this “Box Demon” after all.

“The police have identified and spoken to the ‘Box Demon,’” reads the brief follow-up statement from the department. “There are no public safety concerns.”

Police added that the homeowner has also been “made aware” of the identification of the “Box Demon,” noting that the individual “does not wish to speak any further regarding this incident.”

While this investigation may have been brought to a swift and anticlimactic conclusion, it’s hard to imagine this not inspiring a low-budget horror film with a lightning-fast turnaround, perhaps titled, simply, Box Demon. In a future sequel, Box Demon could even square off against, say, the extremely jacked take on the Bambi character we were all introduced to earlier this week.
