Wale Shares J. Cole's Recipe for Overcoming Writer's Block: 'It Worked a Lil'
Wale recently revealed J. Cole's way of curing writer's block, and said that it worked for him... at least somewhat.
Wale recently shared a story about the time J. Cole guided him through a bout of writer's block. He revealed that the North Carolina rapper's method of meditation worked well enough that the two created a well-loved collaboration right afterwards.
On Monday (April 14), Wale took to the social media platform previously known as Twitter to discuss writer's block.
"Music friends .. how do yall cure writers block ....over the years I've had different methods . Curious what yall do," he wrote. He clarified: "I don't have the block right now FYI. I was just curious."
Wale followed that up by reminiscing about J. Cole.
"I done talked to Cole bout the block a rack of times," he began. "One time [he] try teach me how to meditate.. it worked a lil .. we made 'my boy ' right after."
"My Boy (Freestyle)" appears on Wale's 2018 EP Free Lunch. Cole both raps on and made the beat for the track.
Wale's story got fans reminiscing on when they first heard "My Boy," and sharing hopes that the two might one day release a joint collaborative project.
"A Wale & Cole collab album would be phenomenal," one person wrote.
"I’m still hoping we can get a collab project from you two. Y’all have yet to miss with your collabs," added another, who shouted out two of his favorite Cole/Wale songs, 2021's "Poke It Out" and an early-career effort, 2009's "Beautiful Bliss."
Another listener offered to help out if Wale ever wanted to perform "My Boy" and Cole was unavailable.
"Just call me out and I'll happily step in," he commented.
Wale and Cole's relationship is still going strong: the D.C. rapper just performed at the final iteration of Cole's Dreamville Festival earlier this month. Also on the bill aside from both rappers were 21 Savage, Erykah Badu, Lil Wayne and the Hot Boys, Tems, PARTYNEXTDOOR, GloRilla, Ludacris, Chief Keef, Coco Jones and Keyshia Cole, the last of whom celebrated 20 years of her debut album, The Way It Is.
