No, That's Not a Real CEO Statement About Viral Video of Coldplay 'Affair' Couple
The fake statement quoted Coldplay's "Fix You."
Wait. Is this another article about the pair of Coldplay fans very much caught off guard during a recent stop on the band’s ongoing stadium tour? Why, yes. Yes, it is.
The latest wrinkle in what will no doubt go down among this year’s most viral stories finds an unfortunately large chunk of the general population falling for a fabricated CEO statement. To that end, let’s break down what we know, not to mention what we don’t, about this voraciously speculated-about saga.
What happened at Coldplay's show?
Footage shows the two Coldplay fans in question awkwardly breaking away from each other after a mid-canoodling appearance on a fan cam. In the clip, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin is heard joking about the moment, telling the crowd, in part, “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.” In another clip, Martin adds, “I hope we didn’t do something bad.”
How has the world reacted to the viral Coldplay couple?
Naturally, social media was quick to run with the affair angle, resulting in a slew of jokes. Among them were several levelheaded observations about how, even if an alleged affair was indeed going on between the two, the caught-on-camera moment at the Coldplay show would have never become a story if the two had simply played it cool.
Have the two Coldplay fans spoken out about any of this?
So far, the answer to that appears to be a firm no. Speculation on social media was quick to reach the level of alleged identities being bandied about, though no official statements have been shared. What has been shared is a fake one attributed to the CEO of Astronomer.
TMZ ran a report Thursday night citing a company rep as having confirmed the would-be apology statement is a fake, which (definitely) should have been obvious to everyone from the outset. But with media literacy routinely hitting new all-time lows, it's unfortunately not a shock that a ton of people fell for a fabricated statement that appears to have originated from a phallicly named X account.
Has an official company statement been released?
Friday afternoon, a statement shared to a verified Astronomer account on X included word that “a formal investigation” had been launched.
“Alyssa Stoddard was not at the event and no other employees were in the video,” the statement, seen below, reads. “Andy Byron has not put out any statement, reports saying otherwise are all incorrect.”
Complex has reached out to Astronomer for further comment. This story may be updated.
