Kristin Davis Recalls 'SATC' Cast Being Denied 'The Sopranos' Italian Food on Set
The cast of 'The Sopranos' protected their craft services like the Italian mob.
In the ‘90s and 2000s, HBO’s Sex and the City was groundbreaking in terms of women representation on-screen. But despite the show instantly becoming a beloved classic, there were some studio perks that even this cast was denied.
In the July 17 episode of the Are You a Charlotte? Podcast — a Sex and the City rewatch podcast hosted by Kristin Davis — Davis, who plays Charlotte on the show and its reboot And Just Like That, remembered times when Sex and the City and The Sopranos filmed at Silvercup Studios in Queens, New York.
"Remember that middle area of Silvercup, because it had been the bread factory, so it wasn't really a proper studio?" Davis said to director Allen Coulter during the podcast. “And the different stages would have a common area of hallways, and The Sopranos would have their craft services, which was like going to the best Italian restaurant that you could possibly imagine. And our craft services was really, really... not that."
And when it came to their food, The Sopranos’ crew was just as protective over their craft services as the Italian mob.
“They would guard that food, do you know what I mean?,” Davis said. “They'd be like, 'No. You can't come over here.' And we'd be like, 'Please, can we have some meatballs?...On hour 15, you're really wanting the Sopranos meatballs, but you can't have them."
During television and film scenes in which characters are eating, actors often use what’s called a “spit bucket” to spit out what they’ve eaten, so they don’t get full. However, Coulter — who worked on both Sex and the City and The Sopranos — recalled a time when the food was so good that the cast simply kept eating.
"I remember we were shooting a scene at the Bada Bing, you know, the so-called backroom of the Bada Bing, where they're all having lunch and pasta and stuff,” Coulter said. “When shooting an eating scene, and this would be true of Sex and the City, you always have a spit bucket."
Coulter continued, saying, "So we're shooting that and I go over and I was looking at the guys and the guys had the spit bucket up on the table there, but it's completely clean. I said, 'What's the deal there?' They said, 'They just eat everything.' So we did, like, four takes and they would eat four meals."
Davis revealed that the cast of Sex and the City also didn’t use a spit bucket. "We would order something that wasn't going to be insane, right, for eight million takes or whatever."
Thankfully, it appears there’s no shortage of good food on the And Just Like That set, as Charlotte and her friends are often seen dining at some of New York City’s finest restaurants.
