ASAP Rocky Says Denzel Washington Was Listening to Moneybagg Yo and Pooh Shiesty on Movie Set
Some of the artists Washington is into include Moneybagg Yo, Pooh Shiesty, and NLE Choppa.
ASAP Rocky says his Highest 2 Lowest co-star Denzel Washington really knows his stuff when it comes to hip-hop.
In an interview on The Run-Through with Vogue podcast, on which he also revealed he often steals clothes from Rihanna's closet, Rocky said that Washington would often flaunt his love of hip-hop on the set of Highest 2 Lowest. "Denzel would pull up to the movie set playing Pooh Shiesty and Moneybagg Yo, swear to God," he revealed. "Can't make this up."
Rocky suggested that Washington, 70, has a particular fondness for the Memphis rap scene. "He likes to listen to Memphis rappers, but modern Memphis rappers," he continued. "Then he started quoting NLE Choppa. I'm like, 'You know NLE Choppa?!' He like, 'I don't do drive-bys now, walk 'em down.' I'm like, 'Yo, Denzel, chill!' It was crazy, he's really tapped in, man."
Spike Lee's long-awaited Highest 2 Lowest, a neo-noir thriller reimagining of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 masterpiece High and Low, will feature Rocky starring opposite Washington. The teaser trailer for the movie finally dropped this week, offering fans a glimpse of what to expect ahead of its Cannes premiere later this month. It'll hit theaters in the U.S. on August 22, followed by a streaming release on Apple TV+ on September 5.
When ASAP Rocky was acquitted on two felony assault charges for the alleged shooting of his former friend Terrell Epheron in February, Lee expressed his enthusiasm on Instagram. "Good Morning, Thanks To The Judge And Jury For The NOT GUILTY VERDICT," Lee began. "A$AP AND DENZEL WASHINGTON ARE [multiple fire emojis] IN HIGHEST 2 LOWEST."
