Halle Berry Was 'Madly in Love' With Partner Van Hunt Before They Had Sex: 'It Was Magical'
The couple met in 2020, just four years after Berry finalized her divorce with French actor Olivier Martinez.
Halle Berry and her partner, musician Van Hunt, were practically made for each other.
Both are native Ohioans and are in their fifties, and it took Berry writing a list of what she wanted in a partner to find Hunt. In the ‘Changemakers Issue’ cover story for Marie Claire, the Never Let Go star discussed her relationship with Hunt, which began in 2020, four years after her divorce from French actor Olivier Martinez. Berry, who shares a 10-year-old son, Maceo-Robert, with Martinez, also has a 16-year-old daughter, Nahla Ariela Aubry, with former partner Gabriel Aubry, and has been married twice before.
Following her split from Martinez, the actress told Marie Claire that she took a "sabbatical to understand me," which lasted three years. Throughout her therapy sessions, traveling to India and even learning to meditate, the actress, 58, had an epiphany about her dating life.
"I created my career. I was intentional about that. I knew what I was going to do, and I did it," she said. "But I had never been that intentional with my relationships. I was loosey goosey with that. You have to be clear with the universe [or] any old thing will find you."
It was towards the end of the three years, around 2020, that Berry was nudged by Hunt's brother, who she'd been friends with for years, to meet the artist. Through texts and phone calls that lasted for six months, Berry and Hunt had deep conversations about "the good, the bad, where all of the bodies were buried," and their first intimate experience was just as intense.
"It was the first time I was madly in love before I had sex. That has never happened to me, ever," Berry shared. "Talk about one of those life-changing, beautiful experiences. It was magical, just magical."
The couple currently live together and West Hollywood and Berry has even considered getting married a fourth time. "It took me a minute to get it right," she confessed. "But the nature of the way this happened, I have a real belief that this is it. This is my person."
While Berry has embraced Hunt as her perfect match, Martinez has reportedly struggled with the relationship involving the co-parenting of Maceo-Robert. In court documents, per UsWeekly, Berry alleged that the actor's "lack of acceptance of Van has resulted in Olivier refusing to permit Maceo to work in a family therapy setting" with she and Hunt "as a means to continue to create a healthy environment for our son within the structure of a blended family."
