Judge Tosses Justin Baldoni's $400 Million Lawsuit Against Blake Lively
The actor and director accused Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds of extortion and defamation.
A judge has dismissed a countersuit filed by Justin Baldoni against Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and the couple's publicist.
As reported by People, on Monday (June 9), Judge Lewis J. Liman tossed Baldoni and his production studio's $400 million suit that accused Lively, Reynolds, and publicist Leslie Sloane of defamation and extortion.
Liman also dismissed Baldoni's $250 million defamation lawsuit against The New York Times, which accused the publication of falsifying its bombshell report about Lively suing the actor-director for sexual harassment.
"The Wayfarer Parties have not alleged that Lively is responsible for any statements other than the statements in her CRD [discrimination] complaint, which are privileged," Liman wrote in the filing. "The Wayfarer Parties have alleged that Reynolds and Sloane made additional statements accusing Baldoni of sexual misconduct and that the Times made additional statements accusing the Wayfarer Parties of engaging in a smear campaign."
Liman concluded that the "Wayfarer Parties’ additional claims also fail," thus dismissing the amended complaint "in its entirety." Baldoni and his legal team have until June 23 to amend specific contract-related claims.
Per People, Lively's lawyers said the judge's decision was a "total victory and a complete vindication."
"As we have said from day one, this '$400 million' lawsuit was a sham, and the Court saw right through it," their statement said. "We look forward to the next round, which is seeking attorneys’ fees, treble damages and punitive damages" from the Wayfarer parties who they say "perpetrated this abusive litigation.”
Baldoni and Lively's issues surfaced around the release of their romantic drama It Ends With Us, beginning with the actress' lawsuit and the co-stars being separate during the press tour.
Earlier this month, Lively revoked two claims of intentional and negligent emotional distress, although the move was allegedly in response to the actress being pressured to allow access to her medical records. The legal feud has lasted for months, with celebrities taking sides between the performers.
