SZA Thinks It Would Be 'Gnarly' to Play Storm in the MCU

SZA aims to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as core X-Men member Storm.

The singer-songwriter made her acting debut in One of Them Days alongside Keke Palmer in January. With the buddy comedy raking in $50.6 million globally, SZA seeks to continue her Hollywood streak, which she shared during a visit on The Jennifer Hudson Show on Friday (March 21).

The five-time Grammy winner wants to take on the role of Storm, the Black woman leader of a Marvel team, who Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp previously played in live-action flicks.

"I would love to be a superhero," SZA told Hudson, per Deadline. The vocalist revealed that she "grew up being into Marvel and DC," as her father collected first-edition Thor and Silver Surfer comic books.

As for playing Ororo Munroe, SZA added that the character "comes from this whole other place where it’s the jungle."

"So, I think that would be so gnarly if I could be Storm origin story," she continued. "I love to bring the range."

Storm, who originated as a tribal princess from Kenya, was introduced in the first issue of Giant-Size X-Men in May 1975. As a mutant hero, the character's abilities include weather manipulation, lightning speed, and sensitivity to environmental harm. SZA's big on environmental justice and sustainability, so being cast as Storm could be a win-win for her and Marvel Studios.
