Ben Affleck on Infamous 'Armageddon' DVD Commentary: 'Maybe My Best Work'
Ben Affleck feels a sense of pride over his contributions to the 'Armageddon' DVD commentary legacy.
Every few years, someone taps into virality using an excerpt from Ben Affleck’s hilariously candid and endlessly quotable contributions to the DVD commentary of Michael Bay's 1998 blockbuster Armageddon, resulting in untold joys for the world at large.
There’s practically zero chance you’ve not heard at least some of the commentary in question, very likely as recently as, say, yesterday evening thanks to a timely stop by the Criterion Closet from Affleck himself.
“I was surprised when I heard Criterion was doing Armageddon because I didn’t think of it as that kind of movie when we did it,” Affleck said while holding a copy of the film, also featuring Bruce Willis and Liv Tyler, among other familiar names. “In retrospect now, I feel like maybe my best work in my career is the commentary on this disc. People approach me to talk about the commentary on this disc as much as they do movies that I’ve been in. It’s because I didn’t know any better than to be really honest.”
Affleck, who can currently be seen alongside Jon Bernthal in The Accountant 2 (as well as the latest episode of GOAT Talk), went on to call the commentary an “achievement that I feel proud of,” noting that he “didn’t intend” for it to “be as good as I now think it is.” Fittingly, he also asked the Criterion team a question asked by many before him: “When is the 4K coming out?”
