Thunder Star Jalen Williams Gets $287 Million Extension, Says He Helped His Parents Retire
Last week, the 24-year-old All-Star agreed to a five-year maximum rookie contract extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Jalen Williams has signed a five-year maximum rookie contract extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder that could fetch him as much as $287 million, and news of the deal led him to share that he's already leveraged his success to help his parents retire.
In a recent interview, Williams said he hasn't had time to fully process the major deal.
"I've been at Summer League, watching my brother," he told TMZ. "So, it's been very busy, but it's surreal. I know everybody kind of uses that term, but it's wild 'cause it happened really fast. Like within the span of three years, my life is completely different."
Perhaps the biggest achievement for the 24-year-old All-Star is how his career has allowed him to help out his family.
"I mean, it's cool, I've been fortunate enough to retire my parents," he said.
Williams' parents, Ronald and Nicole Williams, previously worked in the Air Force, with his father working as a jet engine mechanic and logistics specialist and his mother on the medical side.
Williams also reportedly said he plans to vacation in Japan and "do some damage clothing-wise, buy some clothes." He clarified that he won't be doing anything "crazy" until next year when his contract extension kicks in.
As ESPN reported last week, Williams agreed to a $287 million, five-year maximum rookie contract extension. The news came not long after his teammate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander signed a super-maximum four-year, $285 million contract extension, the richest annual contract in NBA history.
