NFL Employee Shot in Back During NYC Mass Shooting

More details have emerged surrounding the mass shooting that went down in New York City, including information about an NFL employee who suffered a gunshot wound during the attack.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic and NYT reports Craig Clementi, an employee in the NFL's finance department — located in the building where the shooting occurred — was shot in the back during the incident on July 28.

Russini says the bullet may have ricocheted before striking Clementi.

She also reports, "Remarkably, the man, who had recently welcomed a new baby, was on the phone with other NFL employees at the time, warning them to stay safe and evacuate the building." She says Clementi was conscious and still making phone calls as he was taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment.

NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, released a statement following the attack saying, "A gunman committed an unspeakable act of violence in our building at 345 Park Avenue.” He said Clementi was in stable condition and the league was supporting his family at the hospital.

Investigators say 27-year-old Shane D. Tamura entered the 44-story building carrying an M4-style semiautomatic rifle, opening fire in the lobby before taking an elevator up to the 33rd floor.

It's been reported Tamura also carried a letter, bashing the NFL for its failure to be upfront about brain injury risks and referencing CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy).

Once on the 33rd floor, police say Tamura fatally shot another person before killing himself.

In total, five people (including the shooter) were killed in the attack. Among the victims was Officer Didarul Islam, who was off-duty and working security in the building's lobby.

It's been reported Tamura may have had intentions of hitting NFL offices located in the building, but accidentally arrived at Rudin Management when he took the elevator up.
