Fans of MTV’s hit show 16 and Pregnant may remember Whitney Purvis, who appeared on the first season of the series, which premiered in 2009. The fifth episode of the season followed Purvis’ journey as a teen from a small town in Georgia, trying to navigate the life-changing news that she was expecting a child with her then-boyfriend Weston Lewis Gosa.

Now, Purvis is making headlines for a very different reason. Purvis, who is now 33 years old, was arrested and taken into custody on July 7 for suspicion of involuntary manslaughter.

The arrest came after Purvis allegedly gave illicit drugs to an individual who later passed away.

In addition to the involuntary manslaughter charge, Purvis was also hit with two other drug-related charges. They are connected to manufacturing, possessing, distributing, or intending to distribute a controlled substance.

Purvis has remained in jail in Floyd County, Georgia, since her arrest. However, during a court hearing on Thursday, July 17, a judge set her bond at $15,000. While she currently remains in custody, she could be released at any time if she is able to get the funds necessary.

"She is still in our facility, just because someone is granted a bond does not mean they will bond out," Deputy Corey Bowers told People.

If Purvis does manage to post bond, there are some strict rules that she will be required to follow. She cannot use drugs or alcohol, cannot contact the victims’ family, and must agree to monthly drug screenings.

During the same year that Purvis appeared on 16 and Pregnant, she gave birth to a little boy named Weston Owen Gosa Jr.. Tragically, in June of 2025, Purvis revealed on social media that her son had passed away following health struggles.

“This is so hard to write. My beautiful son, Weston, has passed away. He was only 16 years old. Life is so cruel and unfair. I just don't understand. Oh my baby is gone and I don't know what to do with myself,” she wrote in a statement.
