The Weeknd Shouts Out 'A Goofy Movie' Multiple Times on Latest 'GOAT Talk' With Jenna Ortega
The Weeknd and Jenna Ortega star in 'Hurry Up Tomorrow,' out Friday.
Goofy, the esteemed anthropomorphic dog and father to the equally revered Max, is given the honor of being mentioned multiple times in the latest episode of Complex’s GOAT Talk with Abel Tesfaye, a.k.a. The Weeknd, and Jenna Ortega.
Early into the new episode, available in full above, the beloved Disney icon is cited by The Weeknd as the “GOAT fictional character you’d be best friends with,” inspiring everyone in the room to immediately burst into laughter.
“I’mma say Goofy,” Abel told the camera. “I don’t know. That’s the first thing that pops in my head, Goofy from A Goofy Movie.”
Asked to elaborate on what he and Goofy might do together, he proposed a camping trip. This, of course, is not unlike the fishing trip-centered plot of A Goofy Movie, which turned 30 years young in April. Ortega, meanwhile, shouted out Parker Posey’s Mary character from Party Girl, another film that turned 30 this year.
The emotional power of a certain Phil Collins classic, Weeknd’s choice for GOAT Future track (“March Madness,” with Abel saying there’s “no debate”), and more are discussed before we make our way to the next Goofy shoutout, this time in response to a “GOAT blunt rotation” inquiry. After naming Jar Jar Binks, from the Star Wars prequel trilogy, Weeknd couldn’t help but return to Goofy. Ann-Margaret and Michèle Lamy rounded out his choices, while the following were given the “GOAT blunt rotation” distinction by Ortega: Anthony Bourdain, Bette Davis, Samuel L. Jackson, Aubrey Plaza, and Marina Abramović.
Incredibly, albeit rightfully, Goofy was brought up once again when Abel and Jenna, who both lead this week’s Hurry Up Tomorrow, were hit with the “GOAT Disney Mount Rushmore” prompt. At first, Weeknd joked that he couldn’t say Goofy again, though Ortega was quick to encourage him to go for it. Jar Jar also popped up again, as did a slew of shared picks for this hypothetical Mount Rushmore. A Goofy Movie at large was a last-minute addition, with Abel correctly denoting it as “one of the greatest.”

Hurry Up Tomorrow, directed by Trey Edward Shults, is out Friday. As Weeknd explained on the latest GOAT Talk, the film is deeply inspired by the work of directors John Cassavetes and Robert Altman. Barry Keoghan also stars.
