Alec Baldwin Stars in the First Trailer for 'Rust'
The movie faced significant delays and uncertainty after the shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
The first trailer for Rust starring Alec Baldwin has arrived.
Rust has had a long journey to release. The low-budget Western movie paused production in 2021 when cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died in an on-set accident involving a prop gun being used by Baldwin, who is also a producer on the project.
The firearm contained a live round, which struck Hutchins and director Joel Souza, killing the former and injuring the latter.
Set in Kansas in the 1880s, the film is about the story of Lucas McCalister (Patrick Scott McDermott) after he "accidentally kills a rancher" and is sentenced to death.
His estranged grandfather Harland Rust, portrayed by Baldwin, helps Lucas break out of jail, and they go on the run together. The cast is rounded out by Travis Fimmel, Frances Fisher, Jake Busey, Josh Hopkins, and Devon Werkheiser.
Rust will receive a limited theatrical release from Falling Forward Films on May 2, while Ascending Media Group will distribute the movie on video-on-demand platforms the same day. The movie had its premiere at Poland's Camerimage Festival in November last year.
Following the death of Hutchins during the production of the film, Baldwin faced charges of involuntary manslaughter. The case was dismissed last year. The armorer who worked on the original production of the film, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, was sentenced to 18 months behind bars for her involvement in the death.
Production resumed in April 2023, but scheduling conflicts meant that actors Brady Noon and Jensen Ackles were replaced by McDermott and Hopkins, respectively. Cinematographer Bianca Cline joined to receive a shared credit with the late Hutchins.
In recent months, Baldwin has opened up about the impact the shooting incident had on him. He said that he was diagnosed with PTSD following the incident, while his wife Hilaria Baldwin said he had "survivor's guilt" and said that he wanted to "kill himself."
