ASAP Rocky and Rihanna Joke They'll Name Third Child After Lawyer
"Our next baby is ASAP Joe," the couple reportedly joked to Rocky's attorney, Joe Tacopina.
While celebrating ASAP Rocky's acquittal in his gun assault trial, he and Rihanna joked their third child might be named after the rapper's lawyer.
After the trial concluded on Tuesday, attorney Joe Tacopina appeared on Extra, where he shared his reaction to the verdict. The Harlem rapper was charged with two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm for his involvement in the November 2021 shooting of his former friend Terell Epheron, formerly ASAP Relli.
Rocky, born Rakim Mayers, faced a maximum of 24 years and rejected a plea deal of 180 days in jail along with a suspended sentence.
"I knew there were two counts, and you know, I've seen odd things happen in jury verdicts where they could split the verdict…" Tacopina told Extra's Billy Bush about waiting for the verdict. "And so after the first 'not guilty', I'm laser-focused on the clerk to hear that second count.
And I look to my right, he's gone. And I didn't know. I didn't know he left. He was just gone. I was like, I said to my partner, 'Did he leave?'... And I see him on top of Rihanna … I couldn't process quickly enough."
As soon as Tacopina caught up with Rocky and Rihanna, who have two sons, the couple joked that their third child would be named after the lawyer.
"Rihanna and Rocky said to me in the courtroom yesterday, they grabbed me and they said, 'Listen, our next baby is ASAP Joe,'" he shared.
Tacopina had already taken up uncle duties before the trial began, even taking care of now-2-year-old RZA before Rihanna performed during the Super Bowl halftime show in 2023. At the time, the singer was pregnant with Riot Rose, who's now 17 months old.
Tacopina recalled that while Rocky was preparing for Super Bowl LVII in Arizona, he asked his lawyer to babysit RZA.
"All of a sudden, Rocky said, 'Can you just take care of a baby? I'm getting a pedicure,' and I don't even know what a pedicure is… 'I'll be done, like, an hour and a half,'" Tacopina recalled. "So I babysat for an hour and a half. There was a different type of relationship with him than with most clients."
Rihanna lent her support in person throughout Rocky's month-long trial, even bringing their children to a day in court.
